Shakedown date set for ZAP Alias in Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize at Michigan International Speedway
The stage is set for the ZAP Alias to kick up its heels in the shakedown stage of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, taking place from Sunday to Saturday, May 2-8, 2010. ZAP is booking its travel plans from Santa Rosa, California to Brooklyn, Michigan.
According to PIAXP, the event is described as follows:
APRIL 26 – MAY 7, 2010: SHAKEDOWN STAGE (CLOSED DOOR COMPETITION EVENT)
Location: Michigan International Speedway, Brooklyn, MI
The purpose of this first stage is to conduct safety inspections and on-track dynamic safety evaluations of competition vehicles. Teams must submit their cars to on-the-ground challenges for the purpose of shaking out problem areas and preparing their vehicles for the Knockout Qualifying Stage that follows, all without risk of elimination by the judges. Vehicles will be tested on braking speed, lane change ability, acceleration and refueling/recharging time, among other elements.”
For spectators, it is not exactly clear if this event will be open to the public. While the above mentioned that the Shakedown would be a “Closed Door Competition,” there was a Tweet this week from Carrie Fox Communications that there would be a spectator section for the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize. Stay tuned for details. One of the best ways to follow the competition is through social networking. PIAXP has made a special effort to have every team using Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Blogs to tell its story and to report its progress throughout the competition. To follow ZAP, search for ‘ZAP Alias’ and ‘zapalias’ on these social network sites.
The ZAP Alias is taking part in the second week of testing. PIAXP broke up the testing into two separate weeks with approximately half the teams conducting testing between April 25 and May 1 and the others between May 2-8. The three different classes, mainstream, alternative tandem and alternative side-by-side have been mixed up to allow a variety of vehicles in both weeks. Luckily we have several people on staff from the greater Michigan/Detroit/Ohio area. Stay tuned for other possible activities happening during that time.
In January the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE chose the state of Michigan to host its intense multi-stage competition that aims to pit some of the world’s most fuel efficient vehicles against one another in a quest to win their share of a $10 million prize purse. Fifty-one super efficient cars from 41 teams survived the rigorous design judging phase and now aim to ready their vehicles for the start of on-track performance events in the spring of 2010, thanks to a unique new partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the Michigan International Speedway (MIS).
